About Us

The departments of Mathematics and Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics are part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, a joint research institute in the Edinburgh Research Partnership collaboration between Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh Universities. The Department of Computer Science has expanded in recent years, and is involved in many state-of-the-art initiatives and research projects.

Edinburgh castle

The School is situated in Heriot-Watt's main campus in Scotland's capital city - if you've visited Edinburgh, you'll know that it really is a great place to live with its unmatched selection of cultural activities. There are around 140 staff and 1,000 students in MACS. About 200 students are working towards a Masters Degree, and another 70 are preparing for a PhD.

The School occupies two adjacent buildings on the campus, the Earl Mountbatten (EM) and Colin Maclaurin (CM) buildings. The School office is in EM1.24 and is open 9.30am - 4.30pm.

Focus on the Future

Heriot-Watt has launched an ambitious strategy to place the university at the forefront of research and research-led education in the UK and internationally. One of the key areas, named "Financial Risk and Actuarial Modelling, Edinburgh" (FRAME), sees a major expansion of our School. This has led to the creation of a number of new jobs for which applications are invited. These are Chair in Actuarial/Financial Mathematics and seven positions for Lecturers/ Senior Lecturers/ Readers in Actuarial or Financial Mathematics .
