Bristol
is one of the leading universities for
the study of Computing. Whilst giving
students an understanding of the foundations
of the subject, we are also continually
exploring new areas, drawing on our research
to inspire new teaching programmes, and
involving students in our research programmes.
We also benefit from the concentration
of high-technology industries in the Bristol
region which provide us with industrial
staff, opportunities for student projects,
vacation work and - for many students
- their first job after graduating. Recent
national assessments have classified our
teaching as excellent and our research
as internationally excellent.
Computing is an interdisciplinary subject,
with historical roots in mathematics,
physics, electronics, psychology and neuroscience;
the interplay between these areas has
kept the subject alive over the past half-century
and is still very much in evidence today.
You will see this diversity within the
courses here - Bristol students experience
it first-hand from the staff, whose interests
range from quantum computing to microprocessor
design to biological computing to wearable
computers.
If you choose to study Computing, you
will meet people from many different backgrounds
and with a wide range of interests. For
some, the attraction is creativity: designing
and making things, from programs to electronic
products. For others, it is about intellectual
challenges: solving problems and finding
ways to understand complex phenomena both
natural and artificial. For others, the
attractions come from its direct relevance
to the real world and its importance in
many other areas of society.
Through
taught MSc programmes and possible research
opportunities, postgraduate study in
computing offers you the chance to focus
on a preferred area of interest and
gain more in-depth knowledge and experience
before moving into your chosen career.
The range of subjects covered within
the department reflects the variety
of people from different backgrounds,
nationalities and cultures that choose
postgraduate study at the University
of Bristol.
Whether your interests include leading-edge
topics such as digital media, cryptography
and artificial intelligence, or technical
skills such as software development,
system design and animation there is
certain to be a programme to suit. Generic
skills such as teamworking, communication
and enterprise are also developed within
the postgraduate programmes, creating
highly regarded graduates for both computing-related
jobs and for other areas of industry,
commerce and the professions.
Your choice of course and university
is an important decision. This prospectus
will give you a brief overview of Bristol's
computing courses and what it is like
to study here. If we can be of any further
help, please contact our Admissions
Co-ordinator who will put you in touch
with the person best able to assist.
