Faculty of Arts

Faculty of Arts

Dating back to the foundation of the University in 1451, the Faculty of Arts is building on more than 550 years of excellence to produce research of international importance. In 2007 the University secured over £2million of funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, significantly more than other higher education institution in the UK.

The breath of expertise ranges across around 20 research centres and specialisms, including the world’s first Centre for Battlefield Archaeology and – part of the School of English & Scottish Language and Literature - the only department dedicated to Scottish Literature in the world. The faculty collaborates extensively with other universities, research institutes and organisations such as European National Libraries and the British Film Institute.

Faculty of Biomedical & Life Sciences

Faculty of Biomedical & Life Sciences

The Faculty of Biomedical & Life Sciences (FBLS) has an international reputation for research in the biological sciences. The research that it carries out covers a wide spectrum of modern biology from molecular biology to population ecology. At the last Research Assessment Exercise (2001) all the faculty’s research was rated as 5 or 5*.

Research is based on broad, multi-disciplinary themes, many of which involve collaborations with other parts of the University or with other universities and research institutes in the UK and throughout the world. Main research themes are: Cardiovascular Science, Cell Biology, Cell Engineering, Functional Ecology, Infection and Immunity, Molecular Genetics, Neuroscience and Molecular Pharmacology, Plant Science, Protein Science, Exercise Science.

Faculty of Education

Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education has a strong focus on research relating to the enhancement of teaching and learning and associated issues of access and social justice, with extensive collaboration with government bodies, employers, education authorities, schools, colleges, the voluntary sector, urban and rural regeneration agencies.

The Faculty has particular research strengths in adult education, higher education (including teacher education and teachers' work), innovation in curriculum policy and practice 3 - 18, and critical and cultural perspectives on education.

Faculty of Engineering

Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering sustains a broad portfolio of internationally leading research which is funded by industry, research councils and governmental agencies from around the world.   Its research environment is enriched through extensive collaboration with the world's other leading universities and research institutes on a range of projects that address the technological needs of society.   Now more than ever the faculty’s research pervades all aspects of modern life by supporting industrial innovation, preserving the environment and underpinning advances in the medical and biological sciences.

The faculty is committed to enhancing research excellence in Engineering in Scotland and has entered into an exciting new partnership between the universities of the West of Scotland, the Glasgow Research Partnership in Engineering.

Faculty of Information & Mathematical Sciences

Faculty of Information & Mathematical Sciences

Leading-edge single and multidisciplinary research is conducted within the cognitive, mathematical and information sciences in all four departments within the faculty which achieved ratings of 5 and 5* in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.

The faculty also hosts four major Research Centres emphasising its pre-eminence in the application of mathematical and information sciences in the biomedical arena: Bioinformatics Research Centre; Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (CCNi); Centre for Mathematics Applied to the Life Sciences (CMALS); Robertson Centre for Biostatistics.

Faculty of Law, Business & Social Sciences

Faculty of Law, Business & Social Sciences

The Faculty of Law, Business & Social Sciences has an outstanding research reputation. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, all departments were rated at grade 4 and above, with five 5-rated (Accounting & Finance, Economic & Social History, Politics, School of Law and Urban Studies) and one department achieving the highest rating of 5* (Central & East European Studies).

There is a great diversity of research carried out by departments and research centres. However, the faculty structure allows for flexible cross-disciplinary research between researchers across departments. The Adam Smith Research Foundation has been established to foster further links between the faculty's disciplines and to support the development of interdisciplinary research both within and beyond the University.

Faculty of Medicine

Faculty of Medicine

Glasgow's co-incidence of poor health in the general population, with its wealth of excellence in medical research and clinical studies, has created a unique test-bed. The University of Glasgow’s Faculty of Medicine is, as a consequence, at the forefront of leading edge clinical interventions and discovery.

Cardiovascular disease and cancer rates are among the highest in the world and these areas form two of the major research themes being pursued by the Faculty of Medicine. The faculty is one of the largest in Europe housing over 350 researchers. The range of activity from fundamental genomic research to clinical trials provides a 'bench to bed' approach focused on health improvement, disease prevention and cure as well as fundamental understanding.

Research is currently divided into 9 divisions.

Faculty of Physical Sciences

Faculty of Physical Sciences

The academic and research staff in the faculty are highly research active undertaking world leading research in areas working towards the identification of gravitational waves, nanotechnology and fundamental particles of matter; organo-metallic clusters, protein crystal structures and synthetic chemistry; and near surface earth sciences, its impact on physical geography together with front line research into aspects of human geography.

The portfolio of research is wide ranging and focused with projects funded by Research Councils, the European Union, overseas bodies and industrial and commercial sponsors, working on a contractual or consultancy basis.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine aims to develop and maintain a multidisciplinary research culture that is responsive to advances in technology and changing priorities in the international arena. The Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM) is the platform from which the Faculty delivers its research objectives in the medium and long term.

The Faculty operates as a single site research facility (with the exception of the Wellcome Centre for Molecular Parasitology which is located in the new Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre) that actively feeds into a matrix of biomedical research in the University of Glasgow and beyond.
