International
class research lies at the heart of our mission, centred
in two state-of-the-art research facilities in East London.
At the Charterhouse Square site, research efforts are
focussed on cancer, cardiology, clinical pharmacology,
inflammation, endocrinology epidemiology and psychiatry.
At Whitechapel, the spectacular new Institute of Cell
and Molecular Sciences building contains researchers
working on infectious diseases, stem cells, dermatology,
gastroenterology, haematology, diabetes, neuroscience
and surgery.
Staff are a mixture of clinicians and scientists and we consider that research issues important to human health can only be achieved by an equal partnership between these differently trained groups of individuals. In each of our research themes we have world-leading researchers and opinion formers. At the same time we strive to provide an environment where young researchers can advance their careers with support and mentoring.

William Harvey Day 2008
William Harvey Day was on Tuesday 14 October 2008.
The day was a great success and the Warden has sent the following message:
The prize for the Oral Presentation was awarded to Dr Adrian Martineau from the Institute of Health Sciences Education, and the poster prizes were won by Athina-Myrto Chioni (Institute of Cancer), Peter King, (William Harvey Research Institute), David Parfitt (William Harvey Research Institute and Institute of Cell & Molecular Science) Emmanouil Papadakis, (Institute of Cell & Molecular Science) and Claudio Raimondi (Institute of Cell & Molecular Science).
Next year's William Harvey Day will be on Tuesday 20 October 2009.
Clinical Research Facility
Activity through the Clinical Research Centre at Whitechapel has increased dramatically in the last few months. A total of 40 commercially sponsored clinical trials are currently planned for 2008. Studies include MS, Epilepsy, UC, Crohn's, Diabetes, Oncology, DVT and Hepatitis. There are also a number of other studies in discussion.
Due to the level of activity it is anticipated that the CRC will be running close to full capacity for most of 2008 but we are still very keen to take on studies planned for later on in the year. The CRC, a joint Trust and School facility, is open to all members of staff wishing to conduct clinical trials. It provides both the space and nursing staff, and if required medical staff, to undertake clinical trials.
If you would like to find out how the CRC can help you with your clinical trials please contact Paul Astin, Clinical Research Business Manager on 13-7263 (020 7882 7263) or by e-mail.
The Joint Research Office
The Joint Research Office acts as a one stop shop for researchers, collaborators, funders and members of the public interested in research taking place at Barts and The London NHS Trust (BLT) or Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD).
The JRO website has details for staff of funding and training opportunities, support available from the Joint Research Office and information on the standards we expect from our researchers.
Both the Trust and the School are keen to collaborate with other research partners. The JRO can offer excellent research expertise and management, high quality facilities and a unique patient base.
Wellcome Trust – Value in People (VIP) Award Scheme 2008/9
The Wellcome Trust has recently confirmed a further annual allocation of funds to Queen Mary under its Value in People (VIP) awards scheme. The scheme was launched in 2003, and provides assistance to Universities in the recruitment, career progression and retention of academic and research staff who are key to the implementation of the University’s strategic objectives in biomedical science.
For 2008/9, 10 awards have been made, spread across the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, the Institute of Cancer, theWilliam Harvey Research Institute, and the Institute of Cell and Molecular Science.
Advance notification had been received that further funds will be available for the year from 1 October 2009, and a call for proposals will be launched in June 2009.
