In the new millennium, businesses are becoming increasingly aware of how their operations impact on their surroundings, and how they can control the effect they have on the physical environment through environmental management systems. As this awareness increases, so does the demand for professionals with these skills.
The courses we offer are vital in contributing to the understanding of the world, its physical process, landscape and resources. Courses are designed so students learn skills in assessing conditions, predicting future developments and managing the environment.
Glamorgan is the perfect university at which to study courses in geography and the environment. In 2002, we became the first university in the UK to receive the ISO 14001 award – the international standard for environmental management systems – for the quality of environment practice and teaching across campus.
One of our most well established research groups at the University of Glamorgan is The Sustainable Environment Research Centre (SERC). SERC comprises The Wastewater Treatment Research Unit, which focuses particularly on anaerobic digestion, and the Hydrogen Research Unit which is recognised nationally and internationally for its work. SERC undertakes national and world-leading research. To achieve this, considerable investment has been made into the facilities available to researchers and students and much of the work of SERC is done in association with industry.
We are in the ideal location too, with the Brecon Beacons National Park to our north and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast to our south. All our courses include a high proportion of practical work in the field, with visits locally, throughout the UK and Europe.
The university was originally established as the Treforest School of Mines back in 1913, so we’ve got almost 90 years experience in the teaching of Earth Science subjects and are one of the leading UK universities in this field. All courses in this section are associated with the Environmental ISO 14001 award. And we are proud to be the first university in the UK to gain this accreditation.
