Funding Opportunities for Masters study - 2009/10 Entry
The Lancaster Environment Centre offers a number of Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Studentships for the MRes Science of the Environment and MSc in Environmental Informatics. An additional number of other bursaries are available across our taught courses. Applicants to the relevant taught masters will automatically be considered for the relevant funding. Please note the first round of funding decisions for the competitive funding is usually made around March. Later rounds are then made throughout the year, however please note that opportunities for the competitive funding decrease throughout the year.
- Funding for UK and EU Applicants

Several NERC funded studentships are available.
Five full on our MRes Science of the Environment. These provides a stipend and payment of fees for UK citizens, and fees only for citizens of other EU states. All students applying to the MRes Science of the Environment will be considered for the awards. Students from countries outside of the EU are not eligible for these studentships.
Five Full on our MSc Environmental Informatics. These provides half a stipend and half payment of fees for UK citizens, and half fees only for citizens of other EU states. All students applying to the MSc Environmental Informatics will be considered for the awards. Students from countries outside of the EU are not eligible for these studentships.
For entry in 2009/10, the Lancaster Environment Centre is pleased to offer a 20% fee discount for Lancaster graduates paying UK/EU-rate fees on the MSc in Contaminated Land and Remediation and the MSc in Sustainable Water Management. For further details please contact Andy Harrod.

A £1000 Heatherlea Postgraduate Bursary is available on the MSc Conservation Science and the MSc in Ecology and the Environment. All MSc Conservation Science and MSc Ecology and the Environment applications will be considered.
There are also a number of LEC bursaries available across our taught masters. All applications will be considered for these.

£1000 bursaries are available to all overseas students studying on our taught Masters degrees; and these are awarded during the academic year.
- Funding for UK and EU Applicants

Several funded PhD Studentships are available. Full studentship (fees and maintenance grant) are available to UK and EU candidates who have been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the 3-year period immediately preceding the date of an award. EU candidates who have not been ordinarily resident in the UK for the last 3 years are eligible for "tuition fees-only" awards (no maintenance grant). International applicants are not eligible for funded PhD’s unless stated.

£1000 bursaries are available to all overseas students studying for a PhD in Environmental Science; and these are awarded during each of the academic years (year 1, year 2 and year3), subject to satisfactory progression.
Unfortunately we do not have any funded studentships for international applicants at this time.

Other possible sources of funding can be found on the main university Postgraduate Funding site which you are advised to check.
UK applicants may also wish to consider a Career Development Loan , which is offered by the Government's Learning and Skills Council (LSC), together with three banks. Career Development Loans enable postgraduate students to borrow up to 80% of their course fees, plus the full costs of books, materials and related expenses such as travel, child care and disability costs. If the applicant has been unemployed for three months or longer before their application, they may borrow up to 100% of the course fees. The minimum loan value is £300, rising to a maximum of £8000. Whilst you are studying, the LSC pays the interest on the loan, with repayment beginning one month after the completion of the course. Information on tuition and bench fees is available from Student Registry. The tuition fees for 2009/10 will be annouced in Spring 2009
The higher fee for the MRes Environment and Development (Overseas Placement) is used to pay for the flight to the overseas placement and for 3 months health insurance while you are away from the UK.
For the MSc in Sustainable Water Management there is a £1000 additional fee which includes provision of 5 - 7 text books and the full costs of the residential field course (Catchment Protection module).
For the MSc in Biophotonics there are £1000 bench fees in addition to the standard tuition fees.
