For over 100 years the Endowment has been helping scholars of merit to realise their dreams of getting a world-class education through its loan scholarship programme. Annually, the Endowment selects around 120 meritorious scholars through a rigorous selection process for the award of the prestigious J N Tata Endowment scholarships for higher studies abroad - ie outside India. Over the years several J N Tata scholars have distinguished themselves in various walks of life.

The Endowment awards only loan scholarships. However, the selected scholars may also qualify for a gift award. The amount to be awarded to each scholar by way of loan and gift scholarship is determined on the basis of norms laid down for the purpose, and does not cover the full cost of studies.

Applicants should be:
- Indian nationals
- Graduates of a recognised Indian university with a consistently good academic record
- Students in the final year of a degree course and those awaiting results can also apply
- Other mid-career professionals planning to go abroad for further research, specialisation or training are eligible to apply
At the time of submitting the completed applications, candidates need not have the admission / offer letters from the universities to which they have applied for the relevant academic year.

After the initial screening of applications, candidates will be shortlisted for an interview in person by subject experts. The final selection will be on the basis of the interview which will be held in Mumbai between March and June.
