Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Bristol is one of the leading centres for research and teaching in mathematics in the UK. There are groups working in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, Applied Mathematics was graded 5*A (one of only three groups in the UK given the highest rating), Pure Mathematics was graded 5B (denoting excellence at an international level) and Statistics was graded 5*A (the only group in the UK given the highest rating). Applied and Statistics have recently been up-graded to the new ``best 5*’’ rating.
