The University of Bristol Department of Social Medicine conducts teaching and research in aetiological epidemiology, health services research, and public health medicine in the UK and, together with the other community-based disciplines of primary care and psychiatry, was one of only three in these fields to be awarded the top 5* grade in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.
