One of the largest Materials operations in the UK, with over thirty permanent academic staff, thirty honorary and visiting staff, and fifty research fellows, the Department has secured 5/A/A, 5*A and 5*A (now 6*) ratings in the RAE of 1992, 1996 and 2001 respectively. The research environment is thriving, and Metallurgy and Materials currently has approximately 120 higher degree students. The Department is recognised as one of the Sunday Times’ Gold Standard Centres of Excellence in (September 2006).
