Institute of Work, Health & Organisations![]() ![]() Subjects: All Subjects
Institution: University of Nottingham The Institute of Work, Health & Organisations - An International Postgraduate Rsearch Institute in Applied The Institute aims to be: A world-class centre of excellence in research We are committed to 'making a difference' and to the promotion of 'healthy people, healthy organisations and healthy communities'. This mission drives both our research and education agendae. The Institute is led by Professor Tom Cox, CBE, with a team of experienced Chartered Health Psychologists, Chartered Occupational Psychologists and Clinical Psychologists. Multi-disciplinary collaborations and team-working are viewed as essential to our success. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (a government quality audit), the Institute was awarded a Grade 5, with Nottingham University Business School. In an earlier Teaching Quality Assessment, we were awarded 24/24, with a commendation for teaching. The Institute was formed in January 1999 bringing together the WHO Centre for Organizational Health and Development, School of Psychology, and the Centre for Health Services Managment, NUBS. This new body was first established as an autonomous centre associated with NUBS but in 2002 was granted independent status as a postgraduate research institute (the equivalent of a school) in the then Faculty of Law & Social Sciences. From 1999 until 2002, the Institute was located in the Business School Building (South) on Jubilee Campus. When it achieved independent status, it moved to the Nottingham Science & Technology Park, by Main Campus although it retained teaching space on the Jubilee campus in the New Business School Building (North). In 2008, the Institute will move back to Jubilee Campus and into International House. The nature of this move partly reflects the development of the Institute’s programme of internationalisation which has now led it to be rightly described as an international postgraduate research institute. In January 1999, on its formation, the Institute comprised on a Chair, two Lecturers and a Teaching Fellow. It had a handful of Research Assistants, offered two Masters courses and had about 24 postgraduate students. Today, about 8 years later, it has grown dramatically. In nottingham, there are now three established Chairs with a fourth to be appointed. In addition, the Institute has four active Special Professors, one of whom works part time for us. There is a Reader, five Associate Professors and four full time Lecturers and two part time Lecturers. There are two research Fellows and five Research Associates. In addition, through the Trent doctoral programme, the Institute has four seconded clinical staff. The Institute’s administrative team has grown from one relatively young secretary in 1999 to three full time administrators with two vacancies and two part time administrators. Together the Institute team supports over 200 postgraduate students iincluding 30 postgraduate research students. Over the years, the Institute has not only grown in size but also expanded its core interests. Originally, the work of the Institute focussed on occupational psychology and on occupational health psychology. In 2002, a health psychology team was started and the following year was joined by the clinical psychologists from the School of Psychology. The clinical psychology presence strengthened with the establishment of the Trent doctoral programme. Throughout this period of growth, the Institute has retained its status as a WHO designated Collaborating Centre in Occupational Health and its position as a leading contributor to the Topic Centre programme of the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work. It has also hosted the journal Work & Stress throughout this time and, recently the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology.
