The David Edge studentship will provide support for a full-time student in 2010-11 in either the MSc Science and Technology Policy and Management or the MSc Science and Technology Studies at the University of Edinburgh. The studentship honours the life and achievements of David Edge.
David Edge (1932-2003) was founder of the Science Studies Unit, a central figure in the development of the field of STS, and a valued colleague and mentor over many years to people now working in the field at Edinburgh and beyond.
The MSc Science and Technology Policy and Management is intended to prepare people for positions in policy and management areas dealing with science, technology and innovation, or in other fields where scientific and technological issues and strategies are central, such as medical, environment or development policy. It attracts an interesting variety of students – those already working, and those aiming at careers, in S&T policy-related positions in public sector agencies, consultancies, professional and industry associations, trade unions and similar organisations. The programme offers specialist strands in Information and Communication Technologies, in Energy and Environment, and in Life Sciences and Biotechnology.
The MSc Science and Technology Studies enables students to explore the relationship between science, technology and society in a cross-disciplinary and rigorous manner. It aims to provide a deep understanding of the complex social, economic and political forces shaping science and technology, and to equip students to investigate and reflect on issues surrounding the role and impact of science and technology in society. A variety of specialist routes are available in the programme, including History of Science and Medicine.
