Department of Geography
King's College London
The aim of the research is to evaluate the significance of inclusive design guidance, standards, and practices in seeking to achieve accessible environments in London. The focus will be the interpretation and application of inclusive design criteria and/or standards by key professionals, such as local authority planning and building control officers, access officers, developers, architects, and others involved in the development process. The broader context of the research is the government’s sustainable communities agenda in which, as the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott (2003), has said, an objective is ‘to drive up design standards’, to enable the development of ‘socially inclusive communities’, characterised by ‘accessibility for all to jobs, health, housing, shops, leisure and community facilities’ (ODPM, 2004: 2).
