This masters programme explores the complex relationships between tourism, the environment and development, with particular reference to the developing world. The degree has grown as response to popular demand for an academic and analytical approach to the study of tourism. It is much more than an extension of the holiday programme! In the three years it has been running, the programme has attracted students who have either worked in tourism, or simply have a strong interest in investigating its impacts on countries of the developing world. As a consequence, the student body is extremely mixed in terms of background, experience and age. This mix seems to be the key to this being a vibrant programme. Following a similar structure to the Environment and Development Programme, with which inevitably there are close links, students are able to choose from a range of systematic and regional courses which enable them to develop their own particular interests The degree thus provides students with a lively and stimulating research environment, and with a qualification which adds significantly to their marketability.
The MA/MSc Tourism, Environment and Development programme aims to provide students from a range of backgrounds, with an advanced critical understanding of the interrelationships between Tourism, Environment and Development with special reference to the distinctive political, social and economic environments of the South, where tourism can be of great economic, environmental, social and political significance. The programme provides language options as a specific training element where appropriate
The Department has ESRC 1 + 3 recognition for this programme. Students applying for this programme or who wish to transfer into it having been accepted initially on the MA must take the Practising Social Research 2 module in addition to the Practising Social Research 1 module and will be awarded an MSC.
