With an increasing majority of the world's population living in cities, urbanization is one of the most important social processes today. This programme explores the nature of cities in both the developed and the developing world, with all their conflicts, complexity and diversity.
The primary aim of the MA/MSc Cities, Culture and Social Change programme is to develop students’ critical understanding of the complex processes of urbanisation, whether in the past, present or future. This involves analysing cultural, economic, political, environmental and social change in cities. This aim is achieved through theoretical investigation and critique, through conceptual analysis, and in the development of methodological and practical skills, especially as related to undertaking quality research on cities. The programme thereby aims to enhance student capacities for critical evaluation of (a) theoretical and conceptual ideas on cities; (b) empirical research that evaluates theoretical propositions; (c) the implications of policy initiatives for cities and their residents; and (d) appropriate methodologies for investigating urban research questions. The programme is intended to develop theoretical sophistication, critical analytical skills and methodological awareness with respect to Cities, Culture and Social Change.
The Department has ESRC 1 + 3 recognition for this programme. Students applying for this programme or who wish to transfer into it having been accepted initially on the MA must take the Practising Social Research 2 module in addition to the Practising Social Research 1 module and will be awarded an MSC.
