Project Description
Applications are invited for an EPSRC supported PhD studentship in collaboration with the School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering at Newcastle University and THERMACORE EUROPE.
This studentship will be concerned with investigating the possibility of utilising polymeric materials in heat exchange applications to either produce a low cost replacement to metal units or to provide corrosion/erosion and fouling resistant coatings for new applications of existing products.
The work will primarily be based on the Thermacore site in Ashington, Northumberland. All facilities including PC, lab space, test equipment and materials will be provided. There may also be the opportunity of continuing employment with Thermacore after completion of the studentship.
Eligibility
This studentship is subject to EPSRC rules for eligibility. Non-EU citizens are not eligible. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and self motivated person who has an enquiring and rigorous approach to research. Relevant experience that demonstrates effective time management, the ability to work in an industrial environment and to liaise with customers and clients will be an advantage. Applicants should have a first or upper second class degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, physics, materials technology or similar area and have an understanding of fluid-dynamics and heat transfer.
Value of the Award
Remuneration will be at the EPSRC studentship rate (currently £12,600 per year) and all tuition fees will be paid.
Duration
The studentship will last for 3 years, commencing from August 2008.
Closing Date
The studentship commences August 2008, however, if the post is not filled by this date we will still accept applications until 31 December 2008.
