MSc Applied Computing

School of Computing

University of Dundee

Subjects:

This one-year postgraduate course has been designed for graduates in subjects other than computing who feel that a postgraduate degree in Applied Computing would be a relevant and marketable addition to their existing qualifications. It consists of six taught units over two semesters, with an examination for each unit. In the first semester you will study Internet and Computer Systems, Software Development, and Software Engineering. In the second semester you will study Database Systems, Advanced Programming Techniques, and Human Computer Interaction & Usability Engineering. You then undertake an individual supervised project lasting until the end of the course.

Computing at the University of Dundee is ranked 21st in the UK according to the just-published Times Good University Guide. The University of Dundee has powered its way to a position as one of Scotland's leading universities with an international reputation for excellence across a range of activities. With over 18,000 students, it is growing fast in both size and reputation. It has performed extremely well in both teaching and research assessment exercises, has spawned a range of spin-out companies to exploit its research and has a model wider-access programme.

Dundee has been described as the largest village in Scotland which gives an indication of how friendly and compact it is. With a population of 150,000 it is not too large but has virtually all the cultural and leisure activities you would expect in a much larger city. It is situated beside a broad estuary of the river Tay, surrounded by hills and farmland, and for lovers of the great outdoors it is hard to imagine another UK location that offers so much all year round on land and water. The University is situated in the centre of Dundee, and everything needed is on the one-stop campus: study facilities, help, advice, leisure activities... yet the attractions of the city centre and the cultural quarter are just a stroll away.

Filling in the Application Form

The application form is quite short and straightforward. You will be able to help us reach a quick decision on your application if you ensure that you provide all the necessary information.

The following information is important to us in reaching our decision on your application.

* Details of your degree(s). It is essential to give the name of the qualification, the name of the institution at which you studied, and an indication of how well you performed. If you can provide a transcript of the subjects you studied, and the marks obtained, that is very helpful.
* If your first language is not English, your English language qualification(s).
* If your degree is not in computing, please describe your level of knowledge and experience in computing.
* A brief explanation of why you want to do this degree. This helps us to ensure that the degree is suitable for you.

References

The references are very important in influencing our decision, and we cannot consider your application until we receive them. If at all possible, we like to have two referees in academic institutions who have taught you during your studies, at least one on your most recent course. References should be supplied on official headed notepaper from the institution concerned, or, in the case of references by email, sent from official institutional email addresses.

Problems obtaining references are the biggest cause of delay in processing applications. It is very important that you give us the correct name and full current address of each referee. If possible please give their telephone numbers and email addresses as well. It is a good idea to contact the referees yourself before giving us their names, to check that you have the correct contact details and that they will be available to give the reference when requested
