PhD Studentships in Photonics

Optoelectronics Research Centre

University of Southampton

The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton is internationally renowned for its research in photonics and laser technology.

We currently offer a broad variety of PhD projects in many diverse areas such as:

• Optical Fibres and Materials
• High-Power, High-Energy Lasers
• Optical Networks and Systems
• Nanophotonics and Meta-materials
• Biophotonic Microsystems
• Planar Lightwave Integration
• Ultrafast Lasers and Applications
• Fundamental Photonics

As a PhD student, most of your time will be spent conducting novel research under the expert guidance of your supervisor. This will often be a mixture of work carried out on your own and in collaboration with other students or research fellows. You will also be required to keep up to date with research literature in your area and in the field of optoelectronics in general. You will be given comprehensive skills training in the ORC, ranging from laser safety courses to report writing and technical lectures on a range of topics in optoelectronics. You would also normally present your work at one or more major international conferences during your PhD studies and publish a number of scientific journal papers.
