The Department of Biology and Biochemistry has been running a one-year, full time MRes degree in Biosciences since Octber 2004. It is envisaged that students can either exit after one year with this degree, or use its training for progression to a MPhil/PhD at this University or elsewhere. The programme is run under the auspices of the Bath Centre for Regenerative Medicine (BCRM), an interdisciplinary group from four sectors of the University, and which is also an EU Marie Curie Early Stage Training Site for Regenerative Medicine.

Aim: The MRes programme is designed to give the student an insight into a range of research activities, techniques and skills as well as to widen their knowledge both of the subject itself and the context within which the research will take place. Most of the time will be spent in the laboratory undertaking two research projects. In addition the students will learn how to prepare a 3-year research proposal suitable for a PhD programme. The graduate will be able either to enter a PhD programme or to use this qualification in research management.
The programme has four main objectives:
• To broaden knowledge of the conduct, management, implications and exploitation of research
• To enhance the specialist knowledge of the students at Masters level
• To provide experience of high level research in two laboratories by conducting defined research projects in state-of-the-art topics in Regenerative Medicine
• To allow the student to become familiar with a wide range of research techniques relevant to their ultimate research goals

Entrance Qualifications: Students should normally have a good 2.1 or higher first degree or equivalent in an appropriate biological science. Students may enter the Programme of Study with a taught Master's degree in an appropriate subject. For those with English as a second language a minimum overall IELTS score of at least 6.5 (or equivalent) is normally required. Pre-sessional English language training may be offered to help some applicants to obtain this level of attainment.

Intake: The target intake for 2008 is ten. Students have come Argentina, PR China, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Italy, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Taiwan and the UK.

Opportunities for graduates: Students who complete a MRes degree will be well qualified to proceed to a three-year PhD programme. They should have a competitive edge in relation to undergraduate students applying for doctoral studies. They will be able to find posts in industry and government where a working knowledge of the nature and demands of academic research is needed.
