Department of Biology & Biochemistry
University of Bath
Having studied for my undergraduate Biochemistry degree at the University of Bath, I had no hesitation in continuing my studies at the university through applying for a PhD position in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry. I am fortunate to have been sponsored for my PhD by AstraZeneca through a CASE award, which gives extra funding for my work, and also provides me with opportunities to gain experience and collaborate with colleagues in industry.
My particular area of interest is the cellular signalling and trafficking events initiated by insulin, with reference to the diabetic disease states were such signalling is disrupted. I have collaborated with colleagues in America and Australia, and to have been fortunate to attend and present early data from my PhD project at international conferences.
The department holds internal seminars by students and staff, and seminars given by external speakers. This, coupled with the diverse research groups in the department, provides a stimulating environment which is supported by excellent scientific facilities. Importantly, there is also an active social scene within the department, making it easy to meet fellow students through departmental sports teams and activities. This extends to the university and students union as a whole, which offer memberships to an extensive range of sports and social clubs.
Bath itself is beautiful city, and a great place to live. It’s small enough so that everything is nearby, but large enough that there is always something to do. I have 2 years remaining of my PhD, and I am looking forward immensely to my time left studying at the university and living in Bath.
