The Characterisation of Polymers in Turbulent Flow

Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology

Imperial College

Applications are invited for an Industrial CASE Studentship with a major international oil servicing company. The successful candidate will work toward her/his PhD in the laboratories of the Polymer and Composite Engineering Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering on the South Kensington Campus of Imperial College London. This project is part of a larger research effort on the characterisation of polymers in turbulent flow. The scientific aims of the overall are to achieve a fundamental understanding of the processes underlying drag reduction by polymer additives. In particular, the role of polymer aggregation will be investigated and the design of polymers with optimal aggregation properties pursued. The successful candidate will work on the synthesis and characterisation of novel water-soluble polymers that are effective to reduce drag in turbulent flow. We are seeking a student interested in polymer synthesis and chemistry and polymer characterisation.

Imperial College is ranked in the top ten universities of the world, according to the 2006 Times Higher Education Supplement league tables.
