Newcastle University
Supervisors: Mr Chris Kilsby and Professor Jim Hall
Project Description
The vulnerability of the UK insurance industry to flood and wind hazards has been highlighted by recent meteorological events. This project aims to assess the large-scale spatial patterns of flood-generating rainfall capable of causing damages in multiple locations in the same event or sequence of events.
Fixed caravan stock in the UK will be taken as an example. Whilst this is rather specific, the methodology developed will be generic and potentially applicable to other spatially distributed risks. The research will be of considerable potential impact in the insurance industry.
Person Specification
Applicants should be graduates with a background in science, engineering, statistics or mathematics and ideally have ability in one or more of the following: programming, databases, statistics packages or MATLAB. A background in meteorology, hydrology or climate science/climatology or GIS would also be desirable.
