Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Nondestructive Evaluation

Research Centre in Nondestructive Evaluation

Imperial College

Work in industry, gain a PhD and earn at the same time: the EngD scheme delivers the best of both worlds to ambitious graduates.

A select group of universities and companies is offering a 4 year industry-based PhD course designed to launch graduates into an engineering career.
21st century industry needs novel Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) technologies to meet safety and environmental challenges. Current research areas include:
 Large area methods
 Automation & robotics
 Advanced transduction
 Modelling & reliability
 Remote & non-contact NDE
 New inspection technologies
 Data fusion & visualization
 Permanently installed sensors

The EngD forms part of the UK Research Centre in NDE, and Research Engineers are registered for their degree at one of the partner universities, Imperial College London, Strathclyde, Bath, Bristol, Nottingham or Warwick University.

Our main industrial partners are Airbus, Alstom, BNFL, E•ON, British Energy, BP, RWE npower, Shell, Serco Assurance and Rolls-Royce, but other companies are also involved. Research engineers carry out most of their project work with their sponsor company, with supervision from one of the partner universities.

We have a full complement of places available in October 2008 for suitable applicants. You should have a good honours degree in engineering or physical science. EU and UK candidates are eligible for full funding by EPSRC, provided they satisfy both academic and residence criteria. Some EU candidates will only be eligible for fees if they cannot satisfy the residence criteria for full funding. Qualifying Research Engineers receive a tax-free stipend of over £18,000 outside London. Employees of a sponsor company may also apply; they continue to receive their normal salary.

If you are interested in this excellent opportunity for training, research and career development, please contact our Administrator, Nina Hancock (n.hancock@imperial.ac.uk) or phone 020 7594 7068 for further details. You are also recommended to visit our website, www.rcnde.ac.uk/EngD.
