The MRes in Translational Medicine is a pioneering new course aimed at training high calibre bioscientists in this emerging discipline. Translational Medicine is a branch of science driven by the objective of improving clinical outcomes from molecular and cellular discoveries – enhancing ‘bench to bedside’ research. The course is based in the new Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, a world-class facility aiming to promote interdisciplinary bioscience at the highest international level. Industry directed training is also provided through AstraZeneca, allowing students to base themselves in a research environment appropriate to their career objectives. Delivered through a combination of taught units and research placements, the MRes offers two distinct pathways: • Option A: Interdisciplinary Molecular Medicine The first pathway provides intense training in the ‘omics’ skills such as genomics, proteomics and metabolomics whilst the second focuses on the delivery of clinical strategies for new cancer drugs. In each case the objective is to equip students with the critical biomedical skills required to advance applied research within academia and industry. The course is research driven, with candidates undertaking two separate projects over a total of 35 weeks in collaboration with academics and industrialists at the forefront of the biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences. It is anticipated that graduates from the MRes will progress onto PhD study or into leading industrial positions within the bioscience and pharmaceutical sector. In recognition of the quality of training on offer Cancer Research UK and AstraZeneca are offering scholarships ahead of the 2008/09 academic year covering UK/EU tuition. Further details are available on the MRes website. The minimum entry requirement is an upper second class honours degree in the biomedical sciences. Limited places remain available for 2008/09 entry. Further details on the course, including guidance on applying, can be found on the MRes website: http://www.medicine.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/mres/translationalmedicine/ Individuals seeking further information can also contact the MRes Course Director Dr Philip Padfield (philip.v.padfield@manchester.ac.uk) General funding sourcesFor general sources of funding that may apply to this study opportunity, visit the page(s) below.
