Description of the project
The Gateshead Millennium Study (GMS) is a longitudinal birth cohort study which is exploring the early origins of obesity. Perception of adiposity, parenting styles as well as diet and physical behaviour and how they are related to development of adiposity in childhood are being explored. The GMS aims to identify potentially modifiable correlates in the child and family. An important aspect of this work includes a multi-staged modelling phase to develop strategies for intervention. The proposed studentship will build on this work to develop and pilot interventions for the prevention of overweight and obesity in childhood. The outcomes of this research will provide evidence to determine the acceptability, efficacy and viability of the intervention strategies and so determine which of the interventions should be taken forward to be tested in an exploratory trial.
