PhD Studentship - The Role of Oscillations in Proprioception and Tremor

Postgraduate Opportunities

Newcastle University

Subjects:

Sponsor: Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University
Supervisors: Professor Stuart Baker
Start Date: 1 October 2008
Duration: 3 years
Application Deadline: Early application is advised as this studentship is only available until a suitable candidate is found.

Brief description of the project
The student will work on a project which has overall funding from the Wellcome Trust. We seek to determine the role of beta-band oscillations in proprioceptive processing, and how neural systems act to reduce tremor. Different aspects of the project involve in vivo experiments recording neural activity, experiments in human subjects, and computational modelling. The student would work on a subset of these aspects following discussion.

Person specification
UK, European and international students may apply for this studentship. Applicants should have a good academic record with at least AAB at A Level (or international equivalent) and have, or expect to obtain, an upper-second-class Honours degree or higher (or international equivalent), preferably in physical sciences (eg physics, engineering, computing, mathematics) or in neuroscience or biology. Strong mathematical and computing skills are also essential for this role. This research project involves working with experimental animals and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and, where appropriate, lead these experiments.

Value of the award
The award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of £12,940 for UK/EU and international students. International students must self-fund the difference between the UK/EU and international tuition fees.
