The recommended deadline for applications for the NERC studentships is 16th June 2008, although late applications will be considered.
The MSc Geoarchaeology provides interdisciplinary training in the range of earth science methods that are of growing importance in archaeology and palaeoenvironmental studies. This training prepares MSc graduates for a wide range of careers in archaeological units and consultancies, heritage organisations, environmental consultancies, local authorities, and research laboratories and organisations. The MSc also provides an excellent training for research at doctoral level.
The interdisciplinary nature of the programme attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds including archaeology, geoscience, geography, plant science, Quaternary science and soil science. The programme is organised by the Department of Archaeology, and includes collaborative interdisciplinary teaching and use of analytical facilities, particularly for soils and sediments teaching, in other departments within the School of Human and Environmental Sciences.
The core programme modules cover the following topics in geoarchaeology and environmental science: Principles and Practice; Field Methods and Experimentation; Laboratory Methods; Micromorphology; Soils in Archaeology; and Research Methods. In addition, students are able to specialise in a range of other options including aspects of: sedimentology, palaeodiet and health; the archaeology of specific periods, regions or themes; or Quaternary science. The MSc in Geoarchaeology is assessed by course work and examination (Autumn-early Summer terms), and a dissertation.
