The MSc in Interdisciplinary Medicine & Engineering (MIME) is a pioneering new one-year Masters course reflecting the converging nature of these two disciplines. MIME has been developed as a response to the increasing demand for graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills to apply interdisciplinary medicine/engineering approaches to the development of novel therapies for healthcare. The course aims to provide medical students with knowledge of engineering practices holding potential to advance medical application; similarly engineering students explore medical problems which could be addressed through the innovative development of bioengineering technologies. The MSc is research-driven, so provides the opportunity to work alongside interdisciplinary experts, from clinicians and scientists to engineers and physicists, on groundbreaking projects. A structured programme of seminars, workshops and tutorials delivered by prominent academics and industrial collaborators provides the foundation for the research that follows. The hub for the delivery of the course is the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, a new £35M centre housing over 85 interlinked research groups. Following an intense series of seminars and tutorials exploring the applied potential of the two disciplines, two independent research projects will be undertaken focusing on specific therapeutic targets. The choice of discipline area will be extensive, covering subjects as varied as tissue engineering, molecular bioengineering, cardiovascular disease and psychopathology. This will allow students to specialise in an area of direct interest whilst putting into practice the skills they have developed. Graduates from the MSc will have the advantage of holding unique skills-sets which are extensively sought after across a number of sectors. It is anticipated that graduates will go on to secure PhD positions, or roles in consultancy, clinical medicine and/or industrial R&D. Six bursaries are available for candidates seeking entry in September 2008. Open to UK nationals only, the bursaries will provide full funding of the course tuition fees as well as a £5, 000 contribution towards living expenses. Limited places remain available for 2008 entry. Further information is available from the MIME website: http://www.medicine.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/medicineengineering/ Deadline for 2008/09 Applications: Friday 29 August 2008 General funding sourcesFor general sources of funding that may apply to this study opportunity, visit the page(s) below.
