Department of Computer Science
University of York
The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Large-Scale Complex IT Systems (LSCITS) is an innovative, world-leading, doctoral-level training programme. It is offered through a unique partnership between the Universities of Bristol, Leeds, Oxford, St Andrews and York, all of which have an international reputation in research fields that are central to LSCITS.
Our EngD is a full-time, four-year, doctoral-level research degree, but (in contrast to a standard PhD) with a taught component that is similar in scope to a postgraduate MSc. The taught component covers technical, social-technical and business aspects of LSCITS and will be presented in one-week modules that are taught at the partner universities, including a customised offering from The York Management School. The research project is largely undertaken in industry. The LSCITS EngD Centre, which is based in the Department of Computer Science at York, will match applicants with suitable industrial or public-sector sponsors and industrially-relevant research projects.
Graduates of the EngD are expected to find employment as researchers, research managers, or other senior positions in research-led organisations, ranging in scale from major blue-chip multinationals or national public-sector organisations, through various small or medium-sized enterprises, to entrepreneurial start-ups.
The LSCITS EngD programme is not only suitable for recent graduates in Computer Science or a cognate discipline, but has been designed to be of particular benefit to those who already have relevant industrial experience and may wish to work with their current employer as their industrial sponsor.
Successful applicants will enrol in one of the LSCITS EngD partner universities and will be supervised jointly by a world-class academic at this institution and a senior member of staff from their industrial sponsor.
Details of the LSCITS EngD and of the wider UK Initiative to which it contributes can be found at www.lscits.org.
