MSC HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE (Approved in principle)

Health and social care is a broad term that refers to the physical, mental and social well being of individuals and their families. Health and social care practitioners are those that offer medical, nursing, allied health care and social care to individuals and their families.

In the last decade, health and social care policy and practice has been in as state of continual challenge due to the growing demands of the national health service. Health care employment initiatives such as the knowledge and skills framework standards, non medical consultancy and pan London health and social care educational demands have increased the need for health and social care professionals to study for higher academic qualifications in order to gain promotion and to meet these standards. Embedded in this is the need to meet the challenges of a constantly changing health and social care climate, changes in the structure of organisations and the adoption of new roles and responsibilities. Many of these of new roles are managerial which require practitioners to develop and enhance people management and leadership knowledge and skills but also comprehend the current changes in health and social care policy that influence their management of junior staff. Attached to this is the need to acknowledge the importance of health and social care law and ethics and its role in care delivery and people management.

This programme aims to:
- Develop a systematic and critical understanding of theories, concepts, principles, issues, debates and new insights relating to health and social care law and ethics and health and social care policy.
- Acquire a comprehensive understanding of research te- chniques including the ability to evaluate critically methodologies and where appropriate new hypotheses.
- Apply advanced knowledge and understanding in decisions and planning connected to professional knowledge of operational and people management strategies and successful approaches to leadership and change and reflect on this process.
- Develop in-depth understanding of the principles of evidence-based health care and how it is applied to individuals.
- Facilitate the personal and professional development of each student and enhance skills in inter-professional practice.
