The MA Writing for Performance is a one calendar year intensive course for people who want to develop their writing practice for live theatre/performance. The course begins by looking at the convention of the well-made play and then moves beyond this to encourage and help participants to develop and extend their formal and structural vocabularies of writing. This is achieved through an exciting range of modules taught by professional writers such as Judith Adams and Deborah Levy in a number of settings, including an intensive residential week at The Ted Hughes Arvon Foundation Creative Writing Centre at Lumb Bank. Participants also study the work of a wide range of innovative live performance writers, including Caryl Churchill, Martin Crimp, Gertrude Stein, Peter Handke, Mac Wellman, Deborah Levy and others.
There is a bursary awarded to an applicant who has a very good overall academic profile, usually resulting in at least an upper second class degree in a related area, and with strong marks across ‘academic’ and appropriate ‘creative’ modules and/or a particularly strong writing portfolio or body of performed work/professional practice. You should be able to demonstrate evidence of strong potential at postgraduate level and a focused understanding of why you intend to study as part of this particular MA
