COURSE DESCRIPTION The Loughborough MBA delivers practical knowledge and skills that can be applied directly and immediately to your work environment, as well as relevant concepts and theories that enhance your understanding of management and organisational environments. Learning and the process by which it occurs are at the heart of the Loughborough MBA, and, as such, study can have both academic and social dimensions. COMPULSORY MODULES include: Operations Management: Covering both service and manufacturing operations the module provides an understanding of the factors that help formulate operational strategies and the implications of implementing them. Process design, resourcing and capacity management approaches are evaluated with reference to real situations through case study analysis and application within participants workplace. Decision Support Systems: Explores the decision-making process and reviews the range of technologies, systems and modelling techniques that can be used to manage information and support decisions. It then examines the approaches used by organisations to successfully plan, develop and implement technology. Business Economics: Provides an understanding of economic concepts and models appropriate to business decision making. You learn to use economic theory to explain and analyse the behaviour or consumers and organisations, and to select relevant economic concepts and apply them to real-life situations. Marketing: You learn the principles of the marketing concept and the marketing mix and critically evaluate their usage in addressing marketing problems. There is also a focus on the processes by which a marketing strategy is developed. Accounting for Managers: This course enables you to understand, analyse and interpret financial information in order that they will be better able to ascertain the financial dimensions of the management process. More specifically, the module covers the scope of financial management and accounting, the objectives and processes o financial reporting, the role of management accounting and an introduction to financing issues. Management of Human Resources: This module tackles critical issues in the management of people, particularly from the perspective of day-to-day line management. Topics include culture and commitment, managing motivation and performance, and staff selection and assessment. Strategy and Leading Change (final year): This key module focuses on the changing nature of the practice and processes of strategic management. Designed to develop strategic analysis skills, the module concentrates on the development of strategic options and the management of change, as well as encouraging an openness to new ideas and the ability to search out and consider the range of options available in most situations. Because this module helps to amalgamate the various components of the MBA programme and reinforces the concept of management as an integrated and multidisciplinary activity, it is double-weighted. MBA Final Year Project: This is a major piece of work supported by an academic supervisor. The aim of the project is to allow you to research and write an independent, detailed piece of work in an area of personal or company interest, in order to improve your research, evaluation and report-writing skills, a s well as your ability to apply management concepts.
