Department of Civil and Structural Engineering
University of Sheffield
ECED is the newest of four postgraduate taught structures courses offered in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield.
COURSE AIMS AND FEATURES
ECED aims to provide students with analytical and experimental capabilities to deal with structural dynamics problems in areas of earthquake engineering, civil vibration engineering and blast and impact.
The course shares the expertise of the Vibration Engineering Research Section, known internationally for a highly applied approach to research and consulting in civil engineering dynamics, dealing with high profile structures such as the London Millennium Bridge. These experiences are shared with course students.
TEACHING
Lectures are delivered by University of Sheffield professors and lecturers. In addition specialist lectures are delivered by visiting professors.
COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT
The ECED course is available as MSc (180 credits) and Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, without dissertation). Both can be taken over one or two years, with the one-year MSc occupying a full calendar year. Typical modules are block-taught, spanning 2- or 3-weeks.
PROJECT WORK
ECED students have priority for dynamics-related dissertations which aim to have practical applications and industrial links.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is by coursework, formal examination and dissertation with an oral examination.
