The Law School
University of Strathclyde
Strathclyde University’s Law School - located in in Glasgow’s dynamic city centre - is an ideal place to consider undertaking postgraduate human rights law study. Not only does Strathclyde stand strongly within the top flight of UK Law Schools, it is one of the leading research establishments in Scotland. Students say that it is a vibrant and inclusive learning environment - a place where a range of exciting postgraduate programmes are offered in brand new facilities dedicated to postgraduate studies.
One student comment reflects the ethos of the programme: “I am really impressed by the teaching. The class is vibrant and enjoyable and provides a great learning environment where I feel comfortable entering into discussions.”
The Master’s programme in Human Rights Law offers law graduates, graduates in related disciplines and those with relevant professional qualifications the opportunity to develop a detailed understanding of human rights law at the UK, European and international levels. As a recent student suggested: “The LL.M Human Rights program has broadened and deepened my legal and socio-historical knowledge, compelling me to reflect on the intersection of law with other disciplines such as psychology, economics and environmental science. It has given me a global perspective.”
Protection of human rights is now a global concern. The ‘war on terror’ has put human rights under pressure. International, regional and domestic human rights instruments are increasingly influential and controversial. These trends will intensify in future years as international human rights law continues to expand, the impact of the European Court of Human Rights grows, and the Human Rights Act 1998 affects new areas of UK law. The LLM, Postgraduate Diploma, and Certificate therefore provide invaluable training and insights for those who have either a professional or academic interest in this evolving human rights culture.
Postgraduate study is a big commitment, so you’ll want to know you’re investing in the right course, at the right institution. In April 2008 Strathclyde Law School was ranked 10th out of 89 in the UK in both the 2009 Good University Guide, and the Times Good University Guide, and 14th out of 86 in the 2009 Guardian University Guide - positioning Strathclyde as one of Scotland's top three Law Schools.
As well as achieving the top rating of 5A in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, the Law School was awarded the highest grade by the Quality Assurance Agency. Their official independent review judged the School’s teaching, learning and assessment strategy as “exemplary”. This means that all of the Law School's academic staff is recognised as being among the top experts in their fields both nationally and internationally.
Academic expertise can be found in a wide range of specialisms. Beyond its postgraduate programme in Human Rights Law, students may wish to consider postgraduate courses in Construction Law, Criminology and Criminal Justice, and Information Technology and Telecommunications Law (available by attendance and by online distance learning). Additionally, there are a variety of Master’s and doctoral level research opportunities.
