PhD Studentship - Functional analysis of CSMD1 in head and neck cancer

The Medical Genetics Research Group invites applications for a prestigious three-year PhD studentship funded through the Gardner Bequest Fund. The project is due to commence in January 2009. Funding will cover UK/EU tuition fees and provide an annual tax-free stipend of £10,000. Non-EU nationals are welcome to apply, but will be required to fund the additional overseas rate of fee.

Head and neck cancer is one of the commonest cancers globally and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. CSMD1 is one of the largest genes in the human genome and is a frequent target of chromosomal deletions in head, neck and prostate cancers. However, little is known of its function. The aims of this study are to elucidate the function of this gene and its role in head and neck cancer. The study will aim to analyse phenotypic effects of both silencing expression and forced expression of CSMD1 in relevant model cells lines. In addition, the transcriptome of the modulated cells will be studied by expression arrays to identify downstream gene expression changes that may offer insight into pathways in which CSMD1 acts.

The successful candidate will be part of a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment and acquire knowledge and advanced laboratory skills in molecular, cellular and cancer biology. All students within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences are also encouraged to take part in transferrable research skills training alongside their PhD to further develop their options at the post-doctoral stage.

We are seeking scientific or clinical (dental/medical) graduates of the highest calibre for this fully-funded studentship. Science graduates are expected to have at least a 2:1 in their first degree or a Master of Science degree in a relevant area. This is an ideal project for prospective PhD candidates looking to establish a career within cancer biology, genetics, oncology or pathology.

We also welcome applications from high calibre candidates with self-arranged funding for this or related projects in molecular pathology, genetics and neurodevelopment.
