SCAST Postgraduate Research Scholarship

SCAST: Schools Competition Settlement Act Trust

The Trustees invite applications from candidates who are registered for, or have been provisionally accepted for, a research degree leading to PhD or equivalent at a recognised educational institution in the UK or abroad and who have not yet obtained funding.

The Trustees will fund up to three scholarships for up to three years full-time research at a fixed rate of £16,500 per annum; fees will be paid directly to the institution at which the successful applicant is registered and the balance paid in instalments to the candidate as a maintenance allowance.

Schedule
The closing dates for receipt of applications was noon on Monday 15 June 2011.

Short-listed applicants will be notified by email within 28 days of the closing date; no other form of notification will be issued. This notification is subject to validation of your attendance at a contributing school.

Terms of award
Contractual terms and conditions of award will be made available to short-listed candidates. Any publication arising from the project will be required to acknowledge funding from the Schools Competition Act Settlement Trust.

Should you have received or accept a similar scholarship or funding arrangement, you will no longer be eligible for the SCAST Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

All awards are made at the absolute discretion of the Trustees.

By submitting an application you agree to be bound by the terms of award. The Trustees reserve the right to receive periodic updates on the progress of your project. You may be asked to attend a Trustees meeting each year to present a report.

Selection process
Each application will be considered on its merit. The initial assessment of applications will use the following criteria:
- The academic record of the applicant;
- The potential impact of the proposed study within the chosen academic field as described in the application and the academic references;
- The potential wider benefit of the research to society for example the economic and business impact, cultural benefit, health, quality of life or contribution to public policy making; and
- Whether the applicant has alternative sources of finance.

The Trustees will make their final decision following interview on the basis of their assessment of the individual applicant.
