School of the Built Environment

Why study at the School of the Built Environment?
The School is the UK's premier destination for studying the Built Environment. We won the Queen's Anniversary Prize for our contribution to higher education, the only UK school, in this discipline, to have been awarded this honour. Our research is ranked as the very best in the UK and our teaching is also ranked as amongst the top in the UK for this subject discipline.
We have over 1350 undergraduate students, 450 Masters students and 150 PhD research students from all over the world. Our students and alumni regularly win prizes in international competitions.
We have a strong, multi-disciplinary, teaching and learning base, strengthened by international collaboration. We have over 65 academic staff 26 of whom are professors. Our top calibre teaching, research and technical staff offer access to leading edge thinking, supported by facilities of the highest quality. Our graduates are much sought after by companies, with some 94% of our bachelor’s students finding employment by graduation or going on to further study.
We offer a range of management focused professionally accredited, bachelors and masters courses. These are informed by our leading edge research work, with many of our top researching academics also teaching on programmes or offering guest lectures on their specialisations. Our courses are developed with the future needs of industry in close focus. This enables our students both to benefit from the latest thinking and to develop skills much sought after by employers leading to excellent and rewarding career prospects. Our courses can be studied full-time, part-time or even over the Internet - options which allow you to combine a career with study.
At Bachelor level our full-time courses offer industrial placement opportunities. Students do well studying with us - around 65% of our graduates achieve a first or 2:1 degree (compared to a national average of 52% in the same subjects).
In the 2008 UK Government Research Assessment Exercise, 25% of our research submission was judged as World Leading and 65% of international excellence standard. We submitted more researchers for assessment than any other university placing us as the UK’s top school for research power – we have retained our number 1 position since 1992.
