Food Standards Agency Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme

Food Standards Agency

The Agency offers up to three postgraduate scholarships each year in defined areas of applied science, including the social sciences, to help train the next generation of scientists in areas relevant to its future needs.

Scholarships may be at either Doctoral or research Masters level. The main criteria on which proposals are assessed are the quality of training provided, scientific quality and relevance to the Agency’s policies. Preference is also given to proposals expected to lead to practical outcomes that benefit consumers.

Applications for research scholarships starting in October 2008 are invited in the following areas of the microbiological safety of food:

food hygiene
meat hygiene

In the first area (ref: FOOD HYGIENE), we particularly welcome proposals to (i) investigate the impact of milder food processing conditions on the microbiological safety of food, or (ii) assess, using novel molecular techniques, the risk posed by Norovirus in shellfish in the UK.

In the second area (ref: MEAT HYGIENE), we welcome proposals in meat production that address methodology to reduce Salmonella in pigs, in particular pre-, pro- and syn-biotic dietary interventions and pre- and post-harvest bacteriophage control.

Proposals are invited from academic and research institutions in the UK. Applications should come from academic and research institutions rather than individuals, although institutions can nominate a particular individual in their application. Applications direct from prospective scholars will not be accepted. Proposals should be within the scope of Agency research programmes and relevant to the UK.

Contacts and how to apply

Administrative contact and how to apply:
Eligible departments or institutes wishing to make an application for research training scholarships starting in October 2008 should complete the funding application form (PGSS1). Institutions applying for these scholarships can nominate a student either when submitting their application form, or after being told of their success in being awarded a scholarship. Applications without a nominated scholar will be accepted by the Agency, and will be assessed in the normal way by an appraisal panel. However, if applications can not be distinguished on the strength of the proposal, an application without a scholar nominated may be at a disadvantage if the quality of the nominated scholars becomes the deciding factor in awarding a scholarship. Institutions successfully awarded scholarships will be announced by the Agency.

Guidance notes, application forms for submitting proposals can be found at http://www.food.gov.uk/science/researchpolicy/researchfunding/scholarshi...
