Janice Cullen completed her MBA studies while working full-time, and went on to form her own consultancy company, JCCL. Her experience and contacts provided some of the building blocks for getting started, but she can testify to the importance of benefiting from the advice of others and seeking out complementary resources even if you are 'going it alone'.
From undergraduate study in 16th century French literature, she had a first career in the classroom, teaching modern languages, with a period on exchange in Russia. Her second career was managing research contracts at the Research Councils and several major UK universities, which included extensive travel in Europe, the US and the Far East. She has also worked for Medilink, a professional association of healthcare technology companies.
Professor Howard Green has over twenty years experience in the management of and research about doctoral education in particular in positions of PVC at Staffordshire University, Dean of the Staffordshire Graduate School and Head of Research Development at Leeds Metropolitan University. In addition, he set up and chaired until 2003 the Modern Universities Research Group and between 2000 and 2006 was Chair of the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE).
Professor Stuart Powell has spent over twenty years working in higher education, firstly in teacher training and then in the delivery and management of research degree study. He held the post of University Research Tutor at the University of Hertfordshire for eight years and that of Director of Research Degrees for six years. He has also been on the Executive Committee of the UK Council for Graduate Education for seven years, most recently holding the position of Honorary Secretary of that Council. He now works half-time as a Research Professor at the University of Hertfordshire where he is currently researching into a range of aspects of postgraduate research in a world-wide context.
