Masters Degree Description

Our MA Creative Writing is one of the longest running in the UK, and has helped hundreds of graduates to become better writers. Our experienced and award-winning writers know the real value of providing an encouraging environment and will help you develop your own writing by studying and practicing the major forms of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and dramatic writing (for stage and screen), culminating in a substantial dissertation project.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to attend an informal interview with the Programme Leader. Further details will be communicated once an application has been received.
Evidence of your writing ability is required. A sample of no more than ten pages of original writing must be submitted with all applications.
For entry to postgraduate level, you should normally possess:
first or upper second (2:1) degree with honours or professional qualification, recognised as being equivalent to degree standard;
or
an ordinary degree, foundation degree, higher national diploma, or university diploma, accompanied by substantial experience in an appropriate field.

Our MA Creative Writing students have the opportunity to attend our PhD Creative Writing student-led research seminar series. Each year, several of our MA students advance to the
PhD programme

Between them, our MA and PhD students have had books published in all forms and received many recognitions of excellence, including being shortlisted for or winning: The Forward First Book Prize for Poetry, the Bristol Short Story Prize, the international Scott prize for Short Fiction, the Edge Hill Reader’s Short Story Prize, the Manchester Metropolitan Novella Prize, and £10,000 Ballymaloe poetry prize.
