Masters Degree Description

In this Masters degree you'll gain knowledge of the practical use of psychology in sport and exercise contexts. You'll develop a critical understanding of the relationship between theoretical concepts and applied practice in the psychological factors influencing sport performance and exercise participation.

The course supports you in developing the necessary practical and professional competencies to conduct needs assessments and develop interventions to support athletes across the lifespan and taking into account cultural contexts. These skills and experiences form part of the required Stage 1 training in Sport and Exercise Psychology and prepare you optimally to start your Stage 2 training to become a registered sport psychologist.

Entry Requirements

A first degree, with honours, at a minimum final classification of Lower Second (2:2) or equivalent in Psychology, Sport and Exercise science or related subject.
If English is not your first language you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 ( Academic level) or equivalent English Language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

Student Destinations

Throughout your course, you'll develop a range of professional skills that will prepare you for an academic career or a career as a consultant sport and exercise psychologist.

You'll learn how to tackle complex problems through critical evaluation, and be able to use your research skills to evidence and solve research questions in real-world contexts. You’ll practise communicating your ideas and findings effectively to variety of audiences and build counselling skills to use when working with coaches, athletes, or professionals.

As a MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology graduate, you'll be able to make use of our professional bodies' professional frameworks and ethical guidelines. You could combine your Stage 2 applied practice with a position as trainee sport and exercise psychologist in psychological service organisations. You might also consider developing a career as a health and wellbeing consultant, or starting your own practice in sport and exercise psychology consultancy.
