Project description:
The advent of future chip technology increasingly relies on the innovative use of glass substrates. The properties of glass including thermal tolerance and mechanical stability make it a promising candidate for next-generation integrated circuits and photonics applications. However, integrating glass substrates into conventional CMOS processes presents significant challenges. Current processing methods struggle to achieve the high degree of control required for glass etching, often leading to suboptimal device performance and yield. Overcoming these obstacles necessitates the development of advanced etching techniques that can precisely pattern glass while maintaining its inherent material advantages.
This project aims to explore the potential of plasma etching as a solution to these challenges. Plasma etching offers the precision and versatility needed to process glass substrates effectively. By leveraging this technology, we can enhance the fabrication processes for future chip technologies, ensuring better performance and integration. A key component of this project is the opportunity to train on state-of-the-art equipment at the CISM (Center for Integrative Semiconductor Materials) facility at Swansea University’s Bay Campus. CISM provides access to cutting-edge tools and resources, allowing for hands-on training with the latest advancements in plasma etching technology provided by SPTS Technologies (a subsidiary of KLA Tencor).
