Bath Engineering & Design Studentships: PROTECT: Protective Resilient cOmposites for exTreme Environments and Critical infrasTructures

  • DeadlineDeadline: 29 November 2026
  • South West, All EnglandSouth West, All England

Description

This project is one of a number in competition for a studentship from the Faculty of Engineering and Design at the University of Bath. If successful, this studentship is expected to commence 04 October 2027.

An alternative start date may be possible if agreed with your intended supervisors and the Doctoral College.

Extreme weather events, natural disasters and increasingly demanding operating environments are creating an urgent need for advanced materials capable of protecting people, equipment and critical infrastructure from severe mechanical loading. Building on the University of Bath’s expertise in impact-resistant composite structures, this PhD project will develop a new generation of lightweight protective materials designed to withstand impact and shock loading in extreme environments.
The research will focus on the design and manufacture of novel composite structures incorporating additional energy-dissipation mechanisms to improve resistance to severe out-of-plane loads and will be tailored for protective devices. The project will combine materials design, advanced manufacturing, and static and dynamic characterisation of composites, and will be supported by analytical, numerical and experimental approaches.
The PhD will follow a “multiscale” methodology: starting from the material level, the project will investigate the interaction between the individual constituents and their influence on interfacial behaviour, then moving at the structural level, where it will explore how novel hybrid reinforcement architectures can control damage initiation, crack propagation and energy absorption. Finally, the project will scale up the proposed solutions and assess their effectiveness in a real protective structure.
A key element of the project will be the development of innovative sandwich structures for body-armour applications. These will combine hybrid fibre-reinforced composite face sheets with advanced multifunctional cores incorporating hierarchical lattice architectures and smart fluids. By tailoring the interaction between these different components, the project will seek to achieve enhanced impact resistance, energy absorption and structural protection. In addition, the research will also investigate the integration of multifunctional capabilities, including embedded in-situ damage detection and SHM (structural health monitoring) features, allowing protective structures to provide information on their integrity following an impact event.
This PhD offers the opportunity to work across materials science, composite manufacturing, experimental mechanics and structural engineering, with potential applications extending from personal protection to the safeguarding of equipment and critical infrastructure in hazardous and extreme environments.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have, or be about to obtain, a UK Honours degree 1st or 2.1, or international equivalent. A master’s level qualification would also be advantageous.

The successful candidate should have a good understanding of advanced materials, ideally with experience in composite materials. Some experience with numerical modelling and experimental characterisation of structural materials would be advantageous, while a background in materials science and chemistry would also be beneficial.

Non-UK applicants, who are not currently studying in the UK, must meet the programme’s English language requirement before the application deadline – no exceptions will be considered.

Fees

Applicants will be considered for a studentship. Studentships cover tuition fees, provide a £1k per annum training support fee, and a maintenance stipend (£21,805 2026/27 rate). International students will be required to cover the cost of a Student visa and Immigration Health Surcharge from personal funds.

How To Apply

o   Informal enquiries are encouraged. Direct these to supervisor email address Fulvio Pinto- [email protected]

Please follow the below instructions carefully.

You must make a formal application via the University of Bath’s online application form for a

PhD in Mechanical Engineering

Please note that you can apply for a maximum of two PhD projects on this programme.

In the ‘Funding Your Studies’ section, you must select ‘University of Bath URSA’ from one of the drop-down menus.

In the ‘Your PhD project’ section, you must quote the project title in the PhD project title field, and you must quote the lead supervisor’s name in the field ‘Name of intended supervisor at University of Bath.’

If you are applying for two projects, you must quote the project title for your second choice project in the field ‘Project 2 Title’ and the lead supervisor’s name in ‘Name of intended supervisor for 2nd choice project at University of Bath.

You must ensure that you follow the above steps correctly. Failure to complete these steps will cause errors in the automated processing of your application and may mean that you are not considered for a particular project.

Who is eligible to apply?

The Faculty of Engineering and Design at the University of Bath has studentships available for Home and Overseas students. However, in line with UKRI policy, the number of studentships available to Overseas students are capped.
