This project is one of a number in competition for a studentship from the Faculty of Engineering and Design at the University of Bath. If successful, this studentship is expected to commence 04 October 2027.
An alternative start date may be possible if agreed with your intended supervisors and the Doctoral College.
This interdisciplinary project aims to investigate, develop and test a new lifecycle approach to water-resilient housing design and management. It will investigate how building-performance assessment, smart water data, environmental monitoring, artificial intelligence and occupant feedback can help homes and neighbourhoods respond to drought, extreme heat, water scarcity and intense rainfall.
The research will connect predicted water efficiency at design stage with construction, occupation, maintenance and retrofit. It will explore how changing occupancy and environmental conditions affect water and hot-water consumption, how leaks and abnormal performance can be identified earlier, and how household and neighbourhood interventions can improve water efficiency, climate preparedness and affordability.
Working with residents and sector partners, the project will consider the interconnected impacts of water use on energy demand, carbon emissions, household costs and occupant wellbeing. It will also examine how privacy-preserving evidence can support housing designers, providers and managers, while creating useful feedback for water companies, infrastructure planning and the future development of housing standards and policy.
The project will deliver and evaluate a prototype assessment and decision-support approach with potential application across new and existing housing.
Applicants must have, or be about to obtain, a UK Honours degree 1st or 2.1, or international equivalent. A master’s level qualification would also be advantageous.
Non-UK applicants, who are not currently studying in the UK, must meet the programme’s English language requirement before the application deadline – no exceptions will be considered.
• Masters Degree or equivalent research or professional experience, in architecture, construction, building services, civil or environmental engineering, housing studies, data science, sustainability, human-computer interaction or a related discipline;
• theoretical or applied competencies in building performance, sustainable housing, climate adaptation or resource efficiency;
• experience of quantitative, qualitative or mixed-method data and analytical tools;
• an awareness of digital technologies used in buildings, infrastructure or environmental monitoring;
• the ability to work across technical, environmental and social disciplines;
• ability to work with external stakeholders or research participants;
• good written, verbal and visual communication skills;
• strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently within a collaborative team;
• a demonstrable commitment to research ethics, equality, diversity and inclusion.
Applicants will be considered for a studentship. Studentships cover tuition fees, provide a £1k per annum training support fee, and a maintenance stipend (£21,805 2026/27 rate). International students will be required to cover the cost of a Student visa and Immigration Health Surcharge from personal funds.
