EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Chemical Technologies: A Systems Approach

  • South West, All EnglandSouth West, All England

Description

Discover new chemistry and materials. Engineer sustainable processes and devices. Innovate sustainable technologies.

Are you an ambitious science or engineering graduate interested in undertaking cutting-edge PhD research in sustainable chemical technologies?

Join the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Chemical Technologies: A Systems Approach at the University of Bath.

We are offering ~15 fully funded PhD studentships starting in October 2027. Combining experimental research with automation, modelling and data-driven approaches, and rigorous sustainability assessment and systems analysis, we tackle challenges across molecular discovery, sustainable manufacturing and the circular economy. Our programme spans six themes connecting discovery with practical applications.

Sustainable Synthesis & Catalysis
Discover new reactions, catalysts and synthetic technologies. Research includes organic synthesis, organometallic and main-group catalysis, photochemistry, electrochemistry and biocatalysis as well as reactor design.

Energy & Functional Materials
Design advanced materials and devices for clean energy, electronics and emerging technologies. Research includes photovoltaics, energy storage, fuel cells, batteries, sensors and smart materials, from materials design to device engineering, manufacturing, recycling and system integration.

Circular Feedstocks & Processes
Develop new routes from renewable resources and waste to valuable chemicals and materials. Research includes biomass and CO2 utilisation, biodegradable polymers, chemical recycling, and innovative technologies for circular manufacturing and waste valorisation.

Health & Environment
Address interconnected challenges in human health, environmental health and sustainability. Research includes sustainable drug and peptide synthesis, molecular sensors, biomaterials and medical devices and wastewater processes.

Digitalisation & Modelling
Accelerate discovery and optimise materials and processes. Research applies molecular simulation, computational chemistry, machine learning/AI, high-throughput experimentation and automation.

Sustainability Assessment & Systems Thinking
Evaluate new technologies within wider systems. Research advances methods and applications in lifecycle assessment, material flow analysis, techno-economic analysis, and process systems engineering.

Four-year doctoral training

Our four-year Integrated PhD begins with an MRes year combining taught modules and two research projects helping you build skills and refine your PhD direction. Throughout, you will benefit from interdisciplinary training, industrial partnerships and the opportunity for a three-month internship in industry, policy or an NGO.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree and must demonstrate a strong interest in sustainability and sustainable technologies. The interdisciplinary nature of the CDT means we are looking for students with diverse academic backgrounds who share a commitment to addressing global sustainability challenges.

Fees

A studentship includes:

  • Tuition fees
  • An annual tax-free stipend, set at the UKRI rate. Currently £21,805 for 26/27.
  • Consumables budget
  • The opportunity to take an up to 3-month paid internship
  • Access to funds for conferences

We also offer funding for international applicants, subject to EPSRC restrictions.

How To Apply

Apply online for the full-time or part-time Integrated PhD. Your personal statement should identify your chosen research theme, explain your motivation and highlight a scientific development that excites you. Please include your chosen research theme at the top of your personal statement. No research proposal is required.

Applications and interviews are considered on a rolling basis until places are filled. Early applications are encouraged. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, identity, disability, or career path. We especially encourage applicants from underrepresented groups.

Who is eligible to apply?

We invite applications from graduates across a range of science and engineering disciplines. We offer both full-time and part-time study options. Please make sure to use the correct application form.
