Course description:

The MSc in Forensic Science and Criminal Justice by distance learning focuses on the evaluation and interpretation of forensic evidence, crucial to police investigations. This part-time course equips students with advanced skills necessary for impactful fieldwork.

The course covers different forms of forensic evidence and their relevance to police investigations. You will delve into the scientific principles behind, and practical application of, forensic examination techniques. You will learn to select appropriate techniques, interpret results, and critically analyse their evidential value. This degree emphasises the ability to confidently argue the reasoning behind interpretation and evaluation of forensic evidence, enabling graduates to establish credibility as expert witnesses in court.

Course structure:

The first year focuses on foundational knowledge, including crime scene examination, trace evidence analysis, evidential value and interpretation, and research methods.

The University of Leicester, a member of the Global Forensics Network, offers students the opportunity to take selected modules from the forensic science Masters degrees at the University of Florida and the University of Canberra. Leicester, which has a strong reputation in forensic science, is the university where DNA fingerprinting was discovered by Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys in 1984.
