Funding: Funded PhD Project (UK and EU students only)

Project code: COMP4540220

Department: School of Computing

Start dates: October 2020

Closing date: 23 February 2020

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD to commence in October 2020.

The Project

The PhD will be based in the Faculty of Technology, and will be supervised by Dr Matthew Poole.

Candidates applying for this project may be eligible to compete for one of a small number of bursaries available; these cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for three years and a stipend in line with the UKRI rate (£15,009 for 2019/2020). Bursary recipients may be eligible for £1,500 for project costs/consumables.

The work on this project will involve:

  • Investigating the advantages and challenges involved in learning programming using a blocks-based environment or a hybrid blocks/text environment over learning using a traditional text-based development environment
  • Designing and implementing a blocks-based environment which supports novice programmers learning programming using a language such as Python, JavaScript, Java or Haskell
  • Analysing the effectiveness of the environment within an appropriate formal educational setting (e.g. a Computer Science classroom)

Entry requirements

General admissions criteria

You’ll need an upper second class honours degree from an internationally recognised university or a Master’s degree in an appropriate subject. In exceptional cases, we may consider equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications.  English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.

Specific candidate requirements

You’ll need to have an interest in computing education research and possess good software development skills; it is likely that the environment would be developed in JavaScript, so skills in this language would be desirable.
