Coventry University (CU) is inviting applications from suitably-qualified graduates for a fully-funded PhD studentships, in the areas of Requirements analysis for safe and secure platooning protocols.

(i) Protocols to manage the cooperation required between trucks to form, manage and disband platoons are now being developed. These have the potential to save substantial sums of money through the reduced fuel consumption incurred by platooning, but will only be adopted if they can be demonstrated to be safe in all traffic and secure against all malicious interaction. They also have to be able to cope with interaction with roadside infrastructure.

In the future, the ability to form platoons will be part of the suite of features offered by automated trucks, and a challenge is to develop and integrate the platooning features to a high degree of assurance. A particular challenge here is around the possibility of outside threats, given the necessity for substantial real-time safety-critical communication between platoon members. This external threat will need to be taken into account by the assurance techniques that are developed, in order to balance the occasionally competing requirements of safety and security. Assurance techniques will need to demonstrate validity across a sufficiently wide range of scenarios.

The standards on which these protocols will be based are beginning to be clarified. A leading contender is the ETSI standards. An initial security analysis of these suggests the possibility of freshness attacks. It is unclear at the moment which communication technology will be employed. The leading contenders are cellular communication and Dedicated Short-Range Communication technology (DSRC).

Entry Requirements

Entry criteria for applicants to PHD

  • A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.
    PLUS
    the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a 3.5 years
  • a minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component)

Additional candidate specification

  • Experimental, modelling or analytical experience
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the subject of hardware or software testing
  • A good general knowledge of security
  • Experience of (or a willingness to quickly learn about) vehicle systems
