Thanks to Cardiff University’s unique position at the forefront of compound semiconductor technology and our strong, long-standing links with industry, we have forged a partnership with Rockley Photonics Ltd to offer a funded MSc in Compound Semiconductor Physics.

As well as being able to offer this funding, we provide all our students with the opportunity to build both experience and contacts with a range of leading companies and organisations in the compound semiconductor sector, providing a solid foundation for your future career.

Career prospects

A postgraduate MSc in Compound Semiconductor Physics offers the opportunity to take advantage of the extensive employment opportunities within the ever-growing compound semiconductor sector.

The programme is jointly delivered by Cardiff University and the Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS).

The ICS is a development at the cutting edge of compound semiconductor technology, linking academia with industry to deliver advances in the compound semiconductor production environment. It is a unique facility in the UK, aiming to create a global hub for compound semiconductor technology research, development, and innovation, positioning Cardiff as the European leader in compound semiconductors.

Today’s global semiconductor market (compound semiconductors and silicon) is worth around US$350bn a year and is growing at 10-15% per annum. According to analysts, global markets for compound semiconductors are projected to grow to more than $300 billion come 2030; three times the growth rate of silicon.

In particular, the South Wales semiconductor industry employs over 1400 highly skilled people and is set to expand rapidly over the next 5 years with the development of 5G, AI and other mega-trend markets.

The dynamic compound semiconductor industry currently needs qualified graduates, meaning you could take up a technical, research, development, or engineering position across the various compound semiconductor sectors. Other career prospects span science or mathematics education, a range of related scientific fields and industries, or the option to progress to further academic study.

Those students offered the Rockley Photonics Scholarship, will also benefit from the opportunity to deliver a project at a Rockley Photonics’ site.

Rockley Photonics Ltd carry out engineering design activities for industrial processes and production.

There is no formal application process for the Rockley Photonics Scholarship. The funded MSc will be granted to the two students deemed to be the best accepted applicants of that academic year.

We will assess whether you are eligible for the discount as part of your application to study the MSc Compound Semiconductor Physics at Cardiff University. If you are eligible, then you will be notified and invited to interview. Once the funding has been approved following interview then the appropriate tuition fee discount will be applied automatically.

The Rockley Photonics Scholarship is available to both Home and International applicants; however, the funding will be offered to International applicants capped at the Home fees level.
