100% world-leading and internationally excellent environment – Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021
Dive into the forefront of scientific discovery and technological advancements with our Materials Science and Engineering programmes at Swansea University. As a globally recognised department, we stand among the leading centres for materials teaching and research in the UK. Graduates emerge well-prepared for fulfilling employment opportunities, encompassing roles such as Materials Engineer, Metallurgist, Product Development Scientist, Research Scientist, Biomedical Engineer, Manufacturing Systems Engineer, and Process Development Scientist.
You will be taught by world-leading researchers and experts, including Professor Dave Worsley who with his research background in materials for solar energy and functional coatings, pioneered the concept of ‘Active Buildings’: buildings that can generate, store and release their own heat and electricity by using integrated renewable energy technologies. To date he has led the development of more than £120M investment in collaborative training, research and innovation.
Our facilities include the Advanced Imaging of Materials (AIM) X-Ray lab and the Metallurgy lab. The AIM X-Ray lab has been used recently to take images of an ancient Egyptian vase. The vase was filled with earth and valuable, therefore researchers did not want to break it to check what was inside. The equipment in the lab allowed us to discover the skeleton of a 1000 year-old snake!
The internationally leading materials research conducted at Swansea is funded by prestigious organisations such as Rolls Royce, Airbus, The European Space Agency, and Tata Steel. In addition, many of our graduates have gone on to have interesting careers at companies such as Tata Steel, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover, Atkins, GE Aviation, Mott MacDonald and Babcock International Group.
